Obedience

Foundational
Value

What is Obedience:

Obedience is an essential Value, for without it, a person cannot achieve real Faith; a person cannot enrich their lives with any of the Foundational Values.

Obedience, as a Foundational Value, explicitly means Obedience to God’s Teachings, as both represented in the Old Testament and the New Testament, and expressly in the Gospels of Jesus Christ.

Obedience is learning, knowing, and following God’s Words and Commandments.  And to be crystal clear, he gave us his Son to show us the the way to everlasting life, that we may avoid the devastation of sin and the pain of death.

All we need do is to be Obedient to his words, his inspiration and Love for Us; and we shall find our way through the narrow path that All are called to enter.

Examples of Obedience:

  • Moses, leading the Jews from slavery; sharing with them the 10 Commandments from God; and eventually bringing them to the promised land.

  • The Apostles, who lived in obedience to Jesus’s teachings and instructions; going out into the world and teaching the Gospel to friend and foe.

  • The Son who listens to his Father’s good counsel; the Daughter who follows her Mother’s gentle urgings; Both who keep God’s Name and Day Holy.

  • The Men and Women of Faith: Reverends, Priests, Nuns, Rabbis, Scholars, Ministers; who Dedicate much of their Lives to Teach the Truth to others.

  • The Teen who decides not to smoke; The Youth who stays in school; The Boyfriend who doesn’t cheat; The Neighbor who doesn’t spread gossip; The Son who cares for his aged parent; The Child who chooses not to shoplift; The Young Man who chooses not to Steal, not to Kill, not to Envy.

Anti-Value: Contempt

Contempt is the opposite of Obedience.

Contempt is a willful disobedience to Learning, to Knowledge, to the Principles and Values that define and support a higher moral character.

People that project Contempt, typically are arrogant, divisive, argumentative, haughty, and disturbed.  You will never find a refined, learned, or wise person who suffers with contempt in their heart and mind.

A Contempt person has no curiosity, no drive to learn or develop; they lead a blind and limited life, stumbling along a wide path which leads to disgrace, suffering, Loneliness and

Isolation from Truth.

Biblical References of Obedience:

  • John 14:15: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

  • 1 John 3:24:  “Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.”

  • John 8:51:  “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”

  • Matthew 7:13-14: “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few”

  • Matthew 7:21-23:  “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
